Actually, Marc Albrecht disputes this. There are issues with DMA slots,
I think, on some controllers. However, on SCSI a wrong setting just
affects read/write speeds (crucial for audio work), it doesn't give
corrupt files as on IDE.

I find 1024 is a good size for a partition containing lots of small
files, but a bigger size (16k) gives noticeably faster response on a
partition used for big audio files. Changing the block size requires
reformatting the partition, so all data must be backed up and restored.
It won't affect other partitions on the same drive.

Adjusting Maxtransfer is safe, and does not affect the data on the drive
but only how it is read or written.

Of course it is always best to do backups anyway in case you make a
mistake and change the wrong setting.
